5 Match Rule

If you were not aware. the MIAA updated some rules that it had exceptions from NFHS in the past:

MIAA Handbook Rule 84.2 (pg.90)

Member schools shall not schedule or compete on more than 20 days of competition. Five matches is the maximum amount that a student may compete on any given day, exclusive of MIAA sponsored tournaments (see 84.3.3).

What does this mean for 1 day tournaments???

If you have more than a 12 man bracket it means you very likely will run into a 5 match rule situation in the medal round. MA has not had to deal with this in the past because it was handled by 24min of wrestling in a day as opposed to number of matches. Rule of thumb on this is that 50% of your 3/4 place will not wrestle and 75% of your 5/6 will not wrestle.

This will have an impact on MA 1 day tournaments.

There is one alternative bracketing format that college uses to deal with this issue. It is called a wrestle back to 5th. In a wrestle back to 5th basically there is one less round of wrestling. Everyone who loses a match is however going for 5th place not 3rd. Only the semi final losers go for 3/4. the result is that tournament using this format 100% of the 3/4 place matches wrestle.

If you were to win by injury default where your opponent never steps on the mat, does that count towards the five matches?

byes and forfeits do not count toward the 5-match rule, but be careful in what you refer to as an injury default, as that implies match has started (not to be confused with a medical forfeit). also, be advised that the NFHS rule has always treated the 5-match rule oddly, such that if 1 wrestler has had only 4 bouts, for purposes of team pts, he wins by forfeit (even if had lost to the guy with 5 earlier). if both have 5, then no 3rd (a tie for 4th). this is specified in the case book (page 7). if a 16-man bracket with 12 entries is seeded correctly, and byes are placed by mutual consent to the top 4 seeds, the possibility of 5-match rule for 3rd is diminished.

and from what I've heard... The Lowell Tny (and only the Lowell Tny at this point) has been granted a waiver from this requirement.
