Obviously don't know all the details however thought an escape might be easier than taking the big boy down in the third. Congrats to Terrance on a great season.

He was at Iowa his freshman year. Any idea why he transferred to RI college? Doesn't seem like he had to wait the usual one year period after transferring either.

That rule does not exist, at least not the way it does in Football and Basketball. I haven't coached college in over a decade, and it probably gets a bit more complicated than I remember (or care to type). However, there is not necessarily a one year period where an athlete is ineligible after a transfer.

If you move down in divisions, there is no sitting out required

Not necessarily the case--- I have seen kids sit out who went down a division.

Here is the rule paraphrased:
The most commonly used exception is known as the "one-time transfer exception." As the name suggests, this exception allows a student-athlete to transfer from one NCAA institution to another on one occasion and be immediately eligible for competition. Certain conditions must be met to use this exception, including: (1) the student-athlete must have been in good academic standing and academically eligible for competition at the previous institution; (2) the previous institution must grant the student-athlete written permission to use of the exception; and (3) the student-athlete cannot have transferred previously from a four-year institution. [Note: In Division I, the one-time transfer exception is not available if the student-athlete wishes to participate in basketball, men's ice hockey or Division I/Football Bowl Subdivision football at the second institution].

For instance: Steven Mocco transferred from Iowa to Oklahoma State and Jimmy Zalesky was enough of a gentleman to release him.

Rematch of the 2011 Dapper Dan Heavyweight match. Longendyke won that one as well, 3-2

how different is the talent in D1 vs D3 wrestling? With so many D1 schools closing over the years as well as some D3 schools I imagine there are plenty of talented wrestlers in both.

I imagine the best D3 wrestlers (like maybe top 3 at nationals) would be D1 national qualifiers.

Totally unscientific conclusion. Just my best guess.

Sounds about right, especially for first place.

First place used to be an automatic qualifier plus wildcards (I believe). I think I was in the first college class ('91) not allowed to qualify for D1s in this fashion. A teammate of mine, who was a year or two older, was able to qualify for D1s through his D2 performance (top two plus wildcards).

He went skiing instead.

I'd say there's a little more overlap than that.... maybe more to the tune of: most D3 national qualifiers could compete (reasonably successfully) at D1... and the best D3 guys would have a shot at AA in D1 (though not every weight every year).

D3 teams do beat D1 teams all the time. (OK, i say this with reasonable confidence, but I just checked Wartburg and Augsburg's schedules, two of the best in D3, and they didn't wrestle any duals against D1 that I could see)... I guess I just know back in the day, WPI used to beat teams like Harvard, Brown, and BC, and they were probably a top 15/top 20 team...

Seems a bit aggressive, but I applaud your enthusiasm as a former div 3 wrestler and placer. Agree in NE div 3 teams can hold their own with Div 1 NE teams. Once you get out of NE not so sure. One recent data point Ryan Malo was a 3x Div 3 AA and used his 4th year of eligibility at Virginia. I believe he did not quality for Div 1 nationals. Again just one data point.

Just a couple comments here and there...

Terrance started his NCAA career at Rutgers, then transferred to Iowa. To my knowledge he did not sit out a season, so his one-time transfer would have been used up already, wouldn't it?

To comment on Malo competing at the D1 level... he was an all-ACC wrestler, placing 3rd. In his one year at Virginia he beat Cam Simaz from Cornell, who won a national title, and Scott Schiller from Minnesota. I'm too lazy to look up this additional stat, but if I remember correctly he pinned a couple top-10 D1 guys at some tournament when he was at Williams as well. Also had 4 pins at the Midlands when Williams went there one year. Like you said, it's just one data point but I'm not sure it's the one you want to use to make your argument.

I'd say that is a bit aggressive too, but I like that you are rooting for the guys. Prior to Dan Gable getting quite upset about D2 and D3 qualifiers for D1 upsetting his chances for a 10th title in a row, D3 Champs and D2 Finalists were D1 qualifiers. Once in a while a D3 kid would place or even win one now and then (A D3 kid from MA won D1s), but that was rare. D2 finalists back then did place frequently, but the number of schools that have dropped their wrestling programs at D2 might make the results different now. You truly had the top kids in College when they did that system in place though, just my humble opinion. I wish they would return to those days, but I think some folks would prefer to keep those new slots to their respective leagues, so I do not see that happening anytime soon.
