Finny... it sounds like you're trying to figure out "am I (or someone you know) good enough to wrestle in college?) The fact is that there are too many variables and individuality for anyone here to give you a concrete answer that will tell you yes or no.
It comes down to a lot of things. i think a lot of people's posts are really talking about mental toughness. A lot of HS wrestlers succeed to a point because they are physically tough, physically strong, or physically talented. But at the college level, they can't take the fact that they have to work hard every day, may not make the lineup at first, and often time get their ass whooped at practice after having been "the stud" in HS.
On the other hand, we had a guy walk on.. never wrestled in HS.. by his senior year of college, he placed high in our regional tournament. Was actually beating the eventual champ with about 20 seconds to go...
There have certainly been guys with the paper you describe... top 5 at all-states, top 8 in NE, who have gone on to have very successful college careers, most likely D3.

You also have to realize that there are many wrestlers in D3 who would also have been very successful at D1..

If you have the ability and desire to go into practice each day with intention to give your all and improve, you'll be fine.

Kid's name was Mike D'Onofrio. He was a cheerleader in HS. No joke!
Pretty sure he went to HS @ Algonquin before they had a program.

I think if there is something you want to do.(wrestle in college) just do it. Its better than looking back and wishing you had.
