Mark Munoz was a 2x NCAA All-American at Oklahoma State University including a season that earned him a national championship. Munoz has expanded on his wrestling base to add a submission game & some diverse striking. Despite an impressive record, he is most famous for a head kick knockout loss to "former wrestler" Matt Hamill.

Mark Munoz: 'The stoppage was justifiable & I wouldn't have wanted to hurt him more than that.' The "Philippine Machine" did some "wrecking" (March 3, 2011) in his middleweight mauling of C.B. Dollaway in the co-main event of UFC on Versus 3: [link]

Jon Jones dismantles "Shogun" to become youngest UFC champion in history. Native New Yorker Jon Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history at 23 years of age. Jones, in front of a sold-out crowd put on an absolute clinic over the former PRIDE legend, using a miriad of striking combos, spinning back elbows, & effective control, all the way until the fight ending crescendo late in round #3.

"Dreams come true everyone. Don't ever stop believing, anything can happen," said Jones, minutes after stopping "Rua" with a barrage of strikes. Rua complimented Jones on his "Muay Thai" & realized -- the new breed of MMA fighter. More... on the UFC 2011 light heavyweight champion, Jon "Bones" Jones: [link]

Jones' next fight against...Anderson Silva?
Las Vegas-- Well it seems as if the Jon Jones hype train is in full effect just a mere 48 hours after his brutal defeat of former light heavyweight champion, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua this past Saturday (3/19/2011) at UFC 128 in New Jersey. He demolished a legend in his prime. And not just any legend, "the" legend, in Shogun Rua--a man who dominated the storied PRIDE FC & came over to the UFC to do the same.

Jones possesses one of the most electrifying skill-sets in MMA today. His combination of collegiate level Greco-Roman Wrestling, world-class work ethic, & explosive striking make him one of the most dangerous fighters in combat sports today. More... [link]

Rashad Evans likens Jon Jones to Judas - National MMA. Two former Elite Wrestlers "going at it"!

So it only takes a title shot to turn friends to enemies? Just months ago, newly minted UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones, was palling around with Rashad Evans at the Jackson's camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Heck, they seemed as if they were best friends, likening each other to brothers in certain interviews. The two fighters trained with each other & despite being in the same division, claimed they would never fight each other.

Well, as the old saying goes, "never say never." As we have come to find out, Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans is happening, which was evident when both fighters met for a staredown after Jones' win over Shogun Rua this past Sat. at UFC #128. And those fighters who were seemingly once so close, are now boardering on the line of being enemies.

One thing is for sure, in MMA, nothing makes for a great grudge match like former training partners (Wrestlers) going at it. Ask Tito Ortiz & Chuck Liddell (Also former Wrestlers). View the article in its entirety: [link]

Former NCAA All-American wrestlers win MMA titles. The flow of talent from college wrestling mat to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition continued unabated in 2010 (& into 2011), as more former collegiate grapplers found their way from wrestling mat to the ring or Octagon. What's more, at least three former NCAA Division I wrestling champs earned world titles in MMA, all in the month of October, 2010.

Cain Velasquez: The former 2x NCAA Division I All-American from Arizona State University won the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) heavyweight title from University of Minnesota wrestler Brock Lesnar who won the 2000 NCAA heavyweight title. The new UFC heavyweight champ now has a 9-0 record in MMA competition.

Ben Askren: The 2x NCAA Division I wrestling champ for the University of Missouri became Bellator Fighting Championships' welterweight champ. Askren is currently a perfect 7-0 in MMA.

Cole Konrad: A 2x NCAA heavyweight wrestling champ for the University of Minnesota, Konrad is now the Bellator Fighting Championships heavyweight champion. Konrad has compiled a 7-0 record in MMA bouts.

*Don't expect these guys to be the last former collegiate wrestlers to earn MMA titles in the coming years. [link]

Another former "World Class" Wrestler wins a World Championship Title for a major MMA Fighting Organization League.

DAN HENDERSON, Strikeforce's Newest Champion, Underscores the UFC Gap: Dan Henderson is a legend of mixed martial arts. A two time U.S. Olympian (1992 & 1996), "Hollywood" (or "Hendo," if you prefer) was a deadly example of what can happen when you take a "World Class Greco-Roman Wrestler" & teach him how to throw a murderous right hand. By his fourth professional bout, Henderson had won a UFC tournament. He then departed to Japan, enjoying success in RINGs & PRIDE that culminated in him avenging a previous decision loss to Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva via brutal KO. Until that point, the only man that had been able to put a dent in Wand's skull had been heavyweight Mirko Cro Cop - Dan's upset victory sent ripples throughout the MMA world. Henderson now found himself in possession of two PRIDE belts - the other coming after defeating Murilo Bustamante in the finals of their welterweight tournament. View more here: [link]

NCAA to MMA: Michael Chandler Shares his Journey from Mizzou to BELLATOR: The sport of MMA has experienced a steady growth in popularity over the past several years & because of the increased visibility, more & more athletes are leaning towards a career in MMA. Talent is coming from all disciplines but with success of legends like Randy Couture & former college champions such as Mark Munoz or Phil Davis, MMA has become a very popular "next step" for College Wrestlers once their days on the mats are over. This year's NCAA Division I Wrestling finals received far more attention from the World of Mixed Martial Arts than it has in previous years & it is rumored that many of the NCAA's best have committed to make the move to MMA. *Check out this great article in its entirety: [link]

Bellator's Warren chases unprecedented trifecta. In MMA, the quest to win a world championship is an all-encompassing full-time job. Then defending the title becomes your full-time occupation. Winning an Olympic gold medal in Wrestling? That requires years of single-minded dedication.

For the next year-plus, Joe Warren plans on doing all three, as he defends his BELLATOR featherweight title, goes after the company's bantamweight title, & trains for the Wrestling World Championships. No fighter in history has ever pulled off something even remotely close. Dan Henderson & Randy Couture in the late 1990's won national championships in Greco-Roman Wrestling after establishing themselves as top stars in MMA.

*There are comparable aspects in Wrestling & MMA, & both sports are based on instant reactions. Couture & Henderson's core fighting skills include the Toughness, Work Ethic & Conditioning learned in the Wrestling room. Warren (6-1), is the current BELLATOR featherweight champion. Time after time, when he seems caught in a hold, or gets lit up standing, he's able to come back & win, largely due to sheer Mental Toughness that comes from being a World Champion Wrestler.

Wrestling was Warren's life long before MMA. "I did everything you could do in wrestling, I was World Champion [2006], Pan American Games Champion [2006] & World Cup Champion [2007]," Warrens said. "I did everything but win an Olympic gold medal. Wrestling is not a sport you can often walk away from & then come back & dominate. But he's dedicating substantial time & effort to rebuild his Wrestling skills.
