Franklin, Natick take Sectional titles

Franklin didn't give up an inch on its run to the Division 1 Central title, routing Newton North 68-5 in the finals yesterday in Lexington.

The Panthers won the first 12 weight classes and built up a 62-0 lead over the Tigers, thanks to great showings from several seniors.

"We've got a great group of seniors," Franklin head coach Carmine Colace said. "These guys have worked hard for four years together. We've made up a lot of time working hard in practice and going to off-season clubs. They've done everything together. Definitely, they are the core of the team."

"We are really close knit and that definitely helps us win," Franklin senior Chris Dixon said. "We are like a family."

Winning matches by fall for Franklin were senior Dan Telhada (145), senior Eric Deslauriers (160), Luke Cowper (189) senior Mike Hoey (215), Mike Gill (285) and Greg Williams (103).

"We wrestled aggressively all day, basically," Colace said. "The last couple practices we worked a lot on whistle drills, executing off the whistle and getting our shots off quick."

Winners by technical fall for the Panthers were Tim Slason (125), senior Nick Carbone (130), and Sean O'Brien (152). Dixon Gallagher (135) won his match by decision (8-1) while seniors Joe Alie (140) and Dixon (171) won their matches by major decision.

The Panthers used a dominant series of leg attacks and were strong on their feet, but up until the 13th match, they had only given up two escapes as a team.

On their way to the finals, Franklin beat Lexington 80-0 in the quarterfinals and Framingham 51-16 in the semi-finals. In the consolation match for third place, Framingham topped Algonquin 45-30.

"Balance-wise, this is one of the first times we have a full team," Colace said. "Our balance makes it tough for other teams, we have four or five guys we can shuffle in at any time. Our depth really helps."

Dixon knew that the title wouldn't be possible if everyone did not contribute in their own way.

"Everyone wrestled as hard as they could, 100 percent all the time," Dixon said. "We've been working hard so we thought it would pay off and we would get through this part of the season kind of easily."

Deslauriers also credited his team's flexibility and senior leadership for its success.

"We are solid all around," Deslauriers said. "We are starting to peak at the right time, the start of the post-season. We keep up the tempo at practice and keep up the hard work and that drives us to success."

Deslauriers believes that the seniors' chemistry will go a long way in determining if Franklin has a shot at winning a second-straight Division 1 State title.

"It really helps set an example for the underclassmen and keeps the team closer together," he said.

Heading into a potential state championship match again this year, both Dixon, Deslauriers and Colace like their chances.

"As long as we keep wrestling as well as we are wrestling now, we can win states and go all the way," Dixon said.

Colace cannot find a reason why history won't repeat itself this year for his kids.

"I think the experience of winning it (team states) last year helps because we have been there before," Colace said. "We wrestled some real good teams earlier in the year. We lost to Bridgewater and those tough matches are going to help us next weekend."

DIVISION 2 METRO SECTIONAL

Will Sulser (130 pounds) had two key pins against Reading and Needham to propel Natick to its fifth straight Division 2 Metro title yesterday in Reading.

Natick beat Boston Latin 53-3 in the first round and then topped Reading 38-25 in the semifinals. Against Bay State Conference rival Needham, the Red and Blue pulled out a 34-25 win en route to the Div. 2 Metro sectional title.

"We feel great," Natick head coach Bob Anniballi said. "This is one of the youngest teams we've ever had so we're happy with the win. We're happy with the win and to get a day off."

Justin Szeto (135) also had a big win over Needham while Chris Funnell (171) won his match by decision 4-3 for Natick.

Going 3-0 on the day for the Red and Blue were Peter Gutierrez (103), Zach Thomas (112), James Smith (140), Kevin Duffy (189) and Joe Kreinsen (215).

For Wellesley, Conor O'Leary won both of his matches at 145 pounds, and Jeff Fine won both of his matches at 152, but the Raiders fell to both Walpole and Belmont in the Division 2 Metro Sectional. Freshman Dan Farina won his match at 189.

In Franklin vs. Framingham, Framingham won at 103, 125, 130 and 140. I think Flannery teched Carbone and Rees beat Allie by about 5-1. Gil Sa was up 2-0 on Sheck going into the second, when Sheck came out on top of a scramble and got the fall. I think Deslauriers beat Patterson by something like 5-2, controlling the match the whole way.
Rees did get revenge against Turetsky in the quarterfinal match. Don't know the score, but I think he won by about 3.
