After my parking ticket last year and the general chaotic nature of the tournament, I think I'll pass this year.

yeah parking is an issue but nothing but good competition up there every year i have been. One of the better tournaments and the kids are evenly split between novice and elite. Plan on going again this year and look forward to the great wrestlers from all over the northeast, states like pa,nj,conn,ny,ma,maine,nh,ri,and of course vt.

When do you go to a Youth Tournament or any other tournament where parking isn't an issue. You got a parking ticket because you were parked somewhere you weren't supposed to be. I have been at MAU high school dozens of times for tournaments and camps and there is tons of parking and most of it is out back behind the high school but you may have to walk a distance. If you park where you're not supposed to park because you dont want to walk then don't complain.

The previous poster is correct. There is a large parking area behind the north side of the high school. If you park in the street anywhere in the winter time in New England you are on your own. If you noticed we have changed the format slightly goiong from 2 flights of wrestling to 3. We are staggering the start times in an attempt to help with the crowd and parking issues. Every year we look at what we have done and try to find ways to make improvements. Every tournament has its flaws, we attenpt to address them from year to year. We look forward to seeing you guys in March. Good luck on the rest of your season.

Thats just plain stupid. MAU middle school has some real strong wrestlers. As far as the tournament, we have always enjoyed it. Compitition has always been tough.

The competition at Bennington is a great tune up before Marshwoods.

Guess what Mr. Doughboy! Best tournament of the year. I am from CT and have traveled all over New England. Don't listen to this idot! Just came from there, and glad I went! Your kid must have been the sore loser!

I have to take my hat off to those guys. It was the best youth tournament of the year! They had the 5-6 years old done in 1 and 15 minutes. Each kid wrestler 3 matches in that time. All were given trophys . Last week at MAWA's I was in the gym for ten hours waiting for my kid to wrestle 3 matches. Next the had the 7-10 years old wrestle. They weighed in an hour later then the first group. They started right on time at 10:30, and were done by 1:15 with every kid getting 3 matches. The 11-15 years old weighed in later.
Started on time at 1:30 and were done by 4:30. The competition was even, they put inexperience kids with inexperience, and studs with studs! Great job to the people of Mt. Anthony and Bennington

Mr. Doughboy:

I have been going with my group from CT longer than that. Really they have always been very good about making sure kids wrestle three times. Yes maybe sometimes it was an hour longer than advertised for a group. What I was trying to say is they put about 400 kids through that tournament right on time. Every kid got three matches, and did not have to live in the gym all day waiting to wrestle. You can never make anyone happy, and it sounds like you could be one of those people! Its too bad that you do not see the good in an event like that, which drew kids from PA, Jersey and all over New England. Did one of their kids beat yours? I don't get why you would be so negative. I have watched those coaches and parents do whatever they can to accomodate people all day long. As far as other Vermont teams, I don't recall any others attending ever!

Maybe you should stay put where you are and not attend, we have way too much negative people or comments like yours in this sport. Good Luck. Are you affiliated with the Doughboy club? If so, I am shocked at your comments.

Matratster, thank you for the kind words. The MAU staff works very hard at making this an event that people look forward to every year. I'm not going to directly address the issues that the previous poster supposidly had many years ago. Time to "let go" and move forward and not live in the past.

We have made many adjustments over the years all in an attempt to deliver a better experience for the wrestlers and their parents. We have had many compliments this year and I expect next year our numbers to grow a bit as a result. The staggered start really helped us stay on time and also helped with crowding issues. The quality of the wrestling was also very very good. I remember seeing one bracket with the #1 NH, #1 CT, a highly ranked NY kid and a NJ kid in it. I think the NY kid won and every bout was within a few points. Sometimes you do run in to situations where due to weights and number of participants you can't always separate the talent like you would want, but most for the most part it worked.

We are hosting an NHSCA qualifier on April 24th if anyone is interested. The post is on this forum.

For those looking for a great late season tournament we would love to see you guys in Bennington next year. doughboy09bravo, if you decide to attend next year, track down that big good lookin guy that looks like Curt Schilling. I'm sure he will attempt to get your son a match with an MAU kid.

Hi we attended the tournament and we love it. Kids can't wait to come back. By far the best year yet. Have a question? There was someone taking pics of some matches, are they going to be posted anywhere? Please let me know.. GREAT JOB again!! You will have 3 coming back for the long drive up!!!! Also, we had one wrestler not win a match, another one wrestle a boy from Bennington and lose.. STILL coming back. You can't win them all. Love Mrs. Whitesell she makes us feel at home!!!!

Whats this crap about MAU "Geting to wreslte Vermont teams?" We were there ( we are from Vermont) and I have wrestlers that would give yours a challange anytime. MAU gives as good as they get and they wouldn't step BACK by lowering themselves to wreslting Vermont teams.
(Sarcasim) MAU takes a great deal of pride in assembling top notch wrestlers, they sure as heck wouldn't wilt away from your team. For that matter nor would the REST of Vermont.

Being from Methuen MA and having a son that is a Wrestler at Smittys Barn I have to say that this tourney has great talent every year and my good friend always Jeff Whitesell has the utmost integrity and nothing but respect for all. This talk is very foolish because I have known these terrific people for many years and they are nothing but super nice people to all! I was sitting last night at Smittys and a coach for 17 years in MA was telling me how it was the most talented group of wrestlers he has seen around these parts in a very long time and that is saying something about this tourney... Next year ask for Jeff and say hello and you will see what I am talking about and no more bashing crap because it just is not valid at all and there is no doubt that this is one of the best Youth tourneys for these parts all year!!

Buzz - I agree completely with you. MAU is lucky to have someone like Jeff Whitesell. He is a stand up guy and I know for a fact that he is always looking for ways to improve this tourney for ALL the wrestlers. He is the kind of guy who would look critically at his own tourney from one year to the next and find ways to make it better. From this years reports it seems he has found the right formula.

Thanks guys for the support. I (we) appreciate it!

Regarding the date for next year, we have tried to keep it the last weekend in March. We are a bit at the mercy of the HS and availabilty. We try to avoid scheduling our tourney head to head with Marshwoods and other higher quality events so the kids and coach's won't be forced to choose. We have talked about bringing a large MAU MS and HS contingent to NHSCA's next year, so we won't want to conflict with that. I guess the short answer is we are not sure yet which weekend next year. As soon as we get a date I will post early as I know coaches out there like to plan early.

Thanks again.

We don't post the results. The completed bracket from each group was given to the winner so he/she could fill in their chart. If we have the staff, next year we may print an extra sheet and have one person make sure they pull them and they are complete so we can post. We have had several requests for this over the years. Now that we have most of the bugs worked out (fingers crossed), we will look to try it for next year.

I want to apologize for the comments made earlier under MY name, one of my kids got into this site and was using my screename to say malicious things about other teams, I tried to delete the comments but it would not let me. I went to a couple tournaments at MAU and yes they were a little confusing but there is a ton of kids there, it's understandable. Some of my team went last week and said they had a good time. I did have some issues with the tournament a few years ago and that was resloved. Again I apologize for any of the things that he said.

we make winners not whiners
